(Relaxnews) – The American Film Institute (AFI) has published its lists of the year’s top ten films — a key indicator ahead of the 2014 Oscars — and top ten TV series.

The top ten list includes a number of features that have already had a successful run in cinemas and festivals, including “Gravity,” “Captain Phillips,” and “Inside Llewyn Davis,” which received the Grand Prix at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

The AFI reserved a spot on its list for all of the suspected frontrunners in the coming Oscars: Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “American Hustle” with its impressive cast (Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Robert De Niro and Amy Adams) and Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave.”

The list also includes “Saving Mr. Banks,” in which Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney, “Nebraska” from “The Descendants” director Alexander Payne, “Fruitvale Station,” praised at the 2013 Sundance Festival, and “Her,” Spike Jonze’s science-fiction comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.

In terms of TV series, the AFI awarded spots on its list for “Breaking Bad,” “House of Cards,” “Game of Thrones,” “Mad Men,” “The Good Wife,” “The Americans,” “Masters of Sex,” “Orange is the New Black,” “Scandal” and “Veep.”
