DOH’s Duque warns vs. self-medication, antibiotic resistance

MANILA, Nov 25 (Mabuhay) — On the heels of Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states’ declaration to fight anti-microbal resistance (AMR), Health Secretary Francisco Duque III cautioned the public against self-medication and antibiotic resistance.

In line with the ASEAN leaders signing of the AMR on the sidelines of the 31st ASEAN Summit in Manila last week, the Department of Health (DOH) launched the National Antibiotic Guidelines.

The guidelines contain treatment recommendations for infectious diseases.

Thus, he warned the public against self-medication especially taking antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription.

Duque explained that antibiotic resistance occurs during self-medication or not following the prescribe medication as microbes “learn” how to get immune to the drugs.

“Next time na kailangan mo ng anti biotic ay wala nang epekto kase ‘yung mikrobyo sa katawan mo ay natuto na labanan ‘yung kaunting antibiotic na ininom mo, kailangan ang inumin mong antibiotic ay sapat para mapuksa ‘yung buong mikrobyo at wag kang magtitira,” he said.

The Health chief also warned against buying antibiotics from sari-sari (convenience) stores.

He took note that the DOH is doing efforts to promote the National Antibiotic Guidelines.

(MNS)
