Duterte tops TIME 100 readers’ poll
MANILA, Apr 17 (Mabuhay) – President Rodrigo Duterte topped a TIME readers’ poll on who should be included in the magazine’s list of “most influential” people of 2017, the publication said on its website on Monday.
Duterte got 5 percent of the total “yes” votes, ahead of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Pope Francis, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who each got 3 percent, TIME said.
The official TIME 100 list, chosen by the magazine’s editors, will be revealed on April 20, it said.
“Since taking office in June, Duterte has waged an aggressive war on drugs that has killed more than 8,000 people in the Philippines, according to Reuters. The controversial anti-drug campaign has inspired growing opposition from human rights groups and some political leaders, including Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo,” the magazine said.
American politician Bernie Sanders won the readers’ poll in 2016 while Russian President Vladimir Putin topped the survey in 2015.
In December, Duterte also landed on the Most Powerful People list of Forbes magazine.
Duterte has made international headlines with a campaign against drugs that has seen thousands of suspected criminals killed.
He has also announced a “separation” from the United States and plans to realign the Philippines with China and Russia. (MNS)
