(Relaxnews) – New York and Orlando have emerged as the top US destination for Americans this holiday season.

According to a TripAdvisor poll of 14,000 respondents across the US, for the 45 percent who said they plan to hit the road or the skies this month, the most popular domestic destination was the Big Apple, followed by Orlando, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Chicago.

Nearly a third (29 percent) said they’re planning a city getaway, while 18 percent indicated they plan to hit the beach and another 11 percent said they plan to retreat to the countryside.

Flyers will be happy to learn that the survey also found that the average national airfare has dropped from $436 USD in 2012 to $401 USD.

Other findings include:

-The top stressors of holiday travel are airline delays and cancellations followed by inclement weather and the cost of transportation.

-The most common smartphone usage among travelers is checking the weather, followed by researching restaurants, navigation, checking the status of a flight and researching or booking accommodations.

Tourists headed to New York may want to consult the city’s official tourism website, which offers helpful information on feting the holidays in the city, including how to watch the iconic crystal ball drop at Times Square on New Year’s Eve (leave your bag at home as police will refuse entry) and the best places to ice skate.
