(Relaxnews) – The best-selling cookie brand of the 21st century celebrates its 100th anniversary this month.

It’s survived two World Wars unscathed, and despite the younger competition, hasn’t yet crumbled.

The Oreo, an iconic American cookie sandwich made with chocolate wafers and a vanilla cream center, celebrates its milestone centenary on March 6 with the release of a limited edition Birthday Cake cookie in which the vanilla cream center is dotted with confetti-like sprinkles.

While sold in 100 countries worldwide, the biggest markets for the Oreo cookie brand include the US, China, Venezuela, Canada, Indonesia and Mexico and pulls in $1.5 (€1.1) billion in global annual revenues.

The cookie is also wildly popular on Facebook, having garnered 25 million likes.

The first Oreo was sold in Hoboken, New Jersey, where the cookies were originally packaged in bulk tins and sold by weight. Back then, grocers paid USD $0.30 cents/lb.

Over its lifetime, the brand has undergone several makeovers and flavor incarnations around the world, including a Strawberry Creme Oreo, sold in Indonesia and Malaysia, a Green Tea Oreo in China and Japan, and a Chocolate and Dulce de leche Oreo sold in Chile and Argentina.

After being slapped with a lawsuit in 2003 for containing harmful trans fats like hydrogenated oils, Nabisco reformulated the recipe so that the classic Oreo cookie now contains non-hydrogenated oils.

The Birthday Cake Oreos are available in the US for the next six weeks or so.

Other iconic junk foods that have celebrated milestone birthdays in recent years include Twinkies, the cream-filled sponge cake which turned 80 in 2010; fizzy orange-flavored drink Orangina, which turned 75 last year; and Coca-Cola which turned 125 last year as well.
