(Relaxnews) – Dan Brown’s May release, “Inferno,” finished the first half of the year as 2013’s best-selling book in print and digital in the US, according to a Nielsen BookScan chart supplied to Publisher’s Weekly, and Amazon.com’s Kindle ranking.

But as PW points out, there’s a great deal of difference between the print and digital charts this time around, especially in comparison to 2012’s equivalent.

At that time, “Fifty Shades” and “The Hunger Games” authors E.L. James and Suzanne Collins were recurrent fixtures in both charts.

Only Sarah Young (“Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace”) got a look-in on the BookScan top ten, in tenth position, while the romantic fiction of Jennifer Probst’s “The Marriage Bargain” and Nicholas Sparks’s “The Lucky One” encroached on digital.

In 2013, Collins is altogether absent from both BookScan and Kindle top 20s, with “Fifty Shades of Grey” eighth bestselling print book and “Fifty Shades Freed” 20th in digital, where Sylvia Day’s “Entwined with You” was ninth.

The only other titles to make both charts were “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn and Khaled Hosseini’s “And The Mountains Echoed.”

Several authors appeared multiple times, with Nicholas Sparks featuring in both print and digital lists, Dr. Seuss’s children’s titles twice in print, while David Baldacci and James Patterson’s thrillers proved popular with the e-book crowd.

And Baz Lurhmann’s interpretation of “The Great Gatsby” had a tremendous impact, with Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel the sixth best-seller in print and fourth on the Kindle platform.
