After “The Immigrant” and “Her” but before “Inherent Vice,” Joaquin Phoenix could accept to play the villain in “Batman vs. Superman.”

(Relaxnews) – Warner Bros has reportedly chosen the actor as the face of the villain in the follow-up to last summer’s superhero blockbuster.

According to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix is being courted by the studios for this key role, details of which remain under wraps. A number of fans have speculated that the antagonist of the sequel will be Lex Luthor, one of Superman’s best-known enemies.

There’s no indication as to whether Warner Bros will succeed in convincing the actor, who is known for setting the bar high when it comes to accepting roles. Chances seem particularly slim in light of the competition: Phoenix has reportedly been offered a possibly conflicting role in Gus Van Sant’s “Sea of Trees,” a drama set in Aokigahara, the fascinating forest at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Its density and melancholic atmosphere have made it a popular place to commit suicide.

Among the most anticipated films of 2015, “Batman vs Superman” will bring Bruce Wayne/Batman and Clark Kent/Superman together on the big screen for the first time. Ben Affleck will take over from Christian Bale in the role of the Gotham City hero, while Henry Cavill will return as the Man of Steel.

Zack Snyder will helm this big-budget feature, in which Wonder Woman will also make an appearance, played by Gal Gadot. Jason Momoa (“Game of Thrones”) and Callan Mulvey (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) are also reportedly being courted for roles in the movie, whose screenplay is currently being revised by Chris Terrio, the award-winning writer behind “Argo.”
