(Relaxnews) – The American actor has partnered with the Monaco-based brand Venturi for the forthcoming international Formula E championship, a race between single-seat cars powered exclusively through electricity. DiCaprio has been a proponent of developing environmentally friendly cars for several years.

This new racing team was co-founded by Leonardo DiCaprio and Venturi Automobiles President Gildo Pallanca Pastor, a pioneer in the electric vehicle industry. The actor, for his part, is a known environmental advocate, having publicly promoted hybrid or all-electric vehicles such as the Toyota Prius or Fisker Karma in the past.

“The future of our planet depends on our ability to embrace fuel-efficient, clean-energy vehicles. Venturi Grand Prix has shown tremendous foresight in their decision to create an environmentally friendly racing team, and I am happy to be a part of this effort,” DiCaprio noted.

The first race in this new championship, held under the auspices of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) will take place on September 13, 2014 in Beijing. The following nine major competitions making up this first season will take place through June 2015.

Venturi also owns Voxan, the French motorcycle manufacturer behind the world’s most powerful all-electric motorcyle (200hp), the Wattman, presented at the latest Paris Motorcycle Show.
