(Relaxnews) – With the film shoot of Sarah Gavron’s “Suffragette” about to commence, Meryl Streep is expected to join the cast as one of its leading ladies.

She’ll play British activist Emily Pankhurst, a leading member of a 1900s equal rights movement that had grown disillusioned with the efficacy of peaceful protest.

Pankhurst made it her mission to ensure that women’s right to vote remained a headline issue.

And it was one of Pankhurst’s followers who was trampled by King George V’s horse during the 1913 Epsom Derby, a tipping point as male support for the wider suffrage movement grew.

Carey Mulligan, whose previous projects include “Pride & Prejudice,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Inside Llewyn Davis,” is also attached to star in the film.

Sarah Gavron of “Brick Lane” and “Village at the End of the World” directs, while “The Iron Lady” scriptwriter Abi Morgan again provides for “Suffragette.”
