(Relaxnews) – The Australian starlet and the American actor have agreed to reprise their roles from the 2010 film “Alice in Wonderland” in a forthcoming sequel, Deadline.com reports.

Mia Wasikowska will return as Alice in this currently untitled sequel, and Johnny Depp will again appear in his unforgettable Mad Hatter guise. Like the 2010 film directed by Tim Burton, the sequel will be loosely based on the writings of Lewis Carroll.

Burton will step aside for the sequel, however, passing the torch to British director James Bobin, who helmed “The Muppets” in 2011. Linda Woolverton, who wrote the screenplay for Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” will also return to write the sequel.

Disney has set the film’s release date for May 27, 2016, during Memorial Day weekend, one of the most active dates for the US box office. The studios will aim to repeat the success of the first film, which brought in $1.03 billion in revenues worldwide.

In the meantime, Disney is turning its attention to other live action adaptations of its classic animated features. “Maleficent,” a darker adaptation of “Sleeping Beauty,” will arrive in theaters in May 2014. In 2015, Disney will present live action versions of both “Cinderella” and “The Jungle Book.”
