(Relaxnews) – The network has greenlighted “Emerald City,” a series adapted from the American children’s literature classic, announced NBC President Bob Greenblatt.

Scheduled to premiere in 2015, the series is described as having a dark tone, in the vein of “Game of Thrones.” Dorothy Gale, a headstrong twenty-something who ends up in Oz against her will, finds herself in the middle of an epic and bloody battle for control of the kingdom.

NBC has ordered 10 episodes of “Emerald City,” which is currently being developed by Matthew Arnold (“Siberia”). News of the project comes out ahead of the anniversary of the 1939 film adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland; the film turns 75 this August.

In parallel, NBC has announced that it is developing “The Slap,” an American remake of the Australian miniseries of the same title. The original version, based on the award-winning novel by Australian author Christos Tsiolkas, followed the consequences of someone slapping a child within a group of friends in the Greek community in Melbourne’s suburbs.

“Emerald City” and “The Slap” join Tina Fey’s new comedy, which is also guaranteed to have a spot in NBC’s 2014/2015 season.
