(SOCHI-AFP) – The Winter Olympics by numbers:

- The United States will have a record 230 athletes competing in the 2014 Games.

- Norway has won 107 gold medals, the most by any nation in Olympic Winter Games history.

- There will be a record 98 events at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

- Duff Gibson was 39 years and 190 days old when he won the men’s skeleton at the Turin Olympics in 2006 to become the oldest gold medal winner in an individual event in Winter Olympics history.

- Figure skating will be contested for the 24th time at the Olympic Games. It has been part of all Olympic Winter Games and of the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1920.

- There are 15 different sports and disciplines on the programme in Sochi.

- There are 12 new events at the Sochi Olympics.

- Biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen can become the most successful athlete in Olympic Winter Games history. He has won 11 medals and he can surpass compatriot Bjorn Daehle’s all-time record 12.

- Luger Albert Demchenko of Russia and Japanese ski jumper Noriaki Kasai will participate in a record seventh Winter Games.

- Five is the most Winter Olympic gold medals won by one athlete in one edition – Eric Heiden of the United States won all men’s speed skating events in 1980.
