(Relaxnews) – The superhero movie stands out as the most lucrative opening of the year at the global box office, grossing $372.5 million worldwide during its first weekend in theaters.

Backed by Disney’s marketing power, “Iron Man 3″ carried off the sixth most lucrative opening weekend in the history of cinema. The action movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. and released last April, came in far ahead of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” which came in second with $209.0 million.

Superman made a successful comeback in “Man of Steel,” in third place with $202 million. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is in the fourth position, followed by “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” one of the year’s surprise successes.
